TALENTS vs SKILLS

So what are talents and why are they the center of the Talent-Based Leadership System? These questions can be answered by studying the difference between talents and skills.

  • Talents are natural and unique to each individual. Talents are natural and are what you are born with. Talents are not simply what you are good at, they are found in the things you truly love to do.
  • Skills are learned. Skills are acquired abilities, learned through study, imagination, training, and practice. They are often as much the result of someone else's doing as your own.

If one pursues what they have true talent in, they will experience the joy of being fully alive in their work. A persons' talents can hardly wait to be expressed. Discovering your talents and using them is critical to personal and professional success because:

  • You are good at these things and you enjoy doing them. -This means you will have more self confidence in your ability to do them well, making it easier for you to market and sell yourself successfully.
  • Talents are what you enjoy -We enjoy doing things that are natural for us to do. It is part of you, the pursuit brings you to an ever deeper experience of yourself.
  • Shorter learning curve and quicker implementation -This will get you off and running earlier, this leads to productivity, confidence, and keeps you motivated.
  • People are not happily drawn to areas where they have little talent or latent ability.

Not discovering and not using talents leads to bad things. To go through life without discovering and unleashing ones strongest talents leads to feelings of frustration, resentment, even depression. An analogy would be damming a great river of energy. The release of talent is one of the greatest joys in life.

Potential ability cannot be drawn from experience alone. No one looks at a healthy baby and says that he or she will never walk because they have not yet done so.  While it is important to recognize experience, it is also very important to know that we are all still learning and in the process of growing.

 NATURAL TALENTS Vs SKILLS

NATURAL TALENTS

Your natural abilities are your natural talents, creativity, and the way you naturally communicate. This is the brilliance that you were born with. Furthermore, talents are unique to each individual. They are what you knew and what you had when you were a child. These abilities are your foundation and the fundamental basis for your success.

Talents are found in the things a person truly enjoys doing and is naturally good at doing.

1. A person will have more confidence in their ability when using their natural talents. This translates to more self-confidence and self-respect.

2. A person will have a shorter learning curve when using their talents because they are naturally good at them. Furthermore, they enjoy using their talents. This leads to higher personal productivity, confidence, and motivation.

SKILLS

Skills are acquired abilities, learned through study, training, and practice. They are what you learn to fit into the job description, to pass a test.  Skills that you have acquired and possess may or may not utilize your innate talents and abilities.  You may possess skills that you do not enjoy using in the work place at all.

TALENTS, CREATIVITY , and  DREAMS

Every person has a dream (vision) for what path he or she wishes to travel, what they want to do in their career, in their job, and for their school or company. This is critical for success. Explore the dreams, and the creativity will be unleashed. Then take action toward the dream.

When you discover your natural abilities and learn skills based on your talents you will truly learn how to maximize your potential in your career. When you use your talents and your creativity in your job, you become part of the 15% of the people who truly are happy in their jobs.

These principles apply equally to students when their talents and dreams are recognized, accepted and encouraged and their creativity is unleashed. They will take the responsibility to work through school and get the education they need to achieve their goals.
